Your link didn't work, but I know the story (which is almost 2 years old now). Yes, I think the punishment is just. Contrary to that title, Josh, who was 18 at the time, was NOT charged with having sex with a 14 year old girl, but rather with having unlawful sexual contact with her (which in this case was consensual kissing and touching). I think that Josh Lunsford obviously acted in poor judgment, but I don't think he deserves to be labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life just because his dad helped pass that law.

I am curious as to why you're asking about this now, when it happened in 2007?

For some reason, to make the link work you have to take out the ; before every =

Thanks for letting me know. I just answered my own question about why this was asked when I saw this link on reddit. It's sad that the article makes no mention of the fact that this occurred 2 years ago.

I think the punishment was fair (10 days in jail, but will not be registered as a sex offender). I don't think he should be labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life because he (as an 18-year-old) went out with a 14 year-old in consensual relationship. It would be a different story if he had raped her or touched her without her permission. And I'm not saying it's all right for an 18 year-old to have sex with a minor and Lunsford probably shouldn't have been in a relationship with her because 14 is very young but his life shouldn't be ruined over it (and he didn't have sex with her, he "fondled" her). The fact that Mark Lunsford worked to pass Jessica's law shouldn't have anything to do with it. Lunsford wasn't even tried under Jessica's law because the minor has to be under 13.
