This action appears to have totally surprised those who knew him, so I am not sure how it could have been prevented. I think he must have just snapped over the course of the last few weeks or perhaps months. He must have been really angry at his family as well as society in general, otherwise why would have have set his house on fire? I lived in Austin Texas for a few years recently (in fact I went by that building every day on my way to work) and generally Austin is different from other Texas cities. It is a very liberal city that usually votes Democratic, it is well-known as "a blue dot in a red state". There are lots of "old hippies" in Austin, who want to live and let live, so in some ways it seems out of place that someone living there would perform such a violent act. Perhaps now we need some type of psychological fitness tests for pilots of all aircraft, regardless of size.
