They lost their jobs as digital distribution models for encyclopedias took over. I base this on the data of the largest print-based encyclopedia (http://corporate.britannica.com/about/index.html) having no job openings on their site, and the relevant data from the 5th era as detailed on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopædia_Britannica).
