What is the best and safest home business?

How does one sort out all the ads for a work from home business? These types of businesses are especially needed for retired people who can not make it on social security.

I'm looking for a work at home job myself. No business is 100% safe, there are some risks. How successful you are depends on how much time and effort you put into it. Here are several ideas that have worked for me:

1. Sell unwanted items on Ebay. Start your prices out low to attract more bidders. Some people have made a living selling on ebay.

2. Open an online store and dropship items to customers. With dropshipping you don't purchase any merchandise up front. The company will send out the item to your customer with your name on it once you have the payment.

Some dropshippers to look into are:

http://www.ckbproducts.com (free service, but you need to register)

http://www.megagoods.com (first month is free and then about $17 per month after that)

*Be careful when dropshipping. A lot of place claim to be wholesale, but they are really middlemen. If you find something that you would like to sell check the prices online first to see if you are getting a good price.

3. Mahalo. Answer as many questions as you can, manage pages, and complete whatever task that you are eligible for to earn more money.

4. Create a website or blog and generate revenue through advertising. Weebly is one of my favorite free website design sites. Squidoo is my favorite for blogging. Both require little to no technical skills.

5. Product Testing and/or Mystery Shopping

Some work at home jobs that you should stay away from are envelope stuffing (most companies have machines that do this, they don't need people), crafts (unless you are doing you own thing. The crafts you send back to companies will never meet their standards and you will not get paid), anything other then a business opportunity that requires you to pay money (you shouldn't have to pay any money to work for someone).

I read about a woman who mailed out recipes on a photo. That seemed very safe. She lived in Hana, Maui. The county shut her down, because she had not asked for a permit to have a home business. That's how I heard about her.
