Is it a must that a person sign up for coverage when they're newly employed? Can one opt out for a bigger paycheck?

Yes, you should be able to opt out of healthcare. There will probably be some type of waiver that you sign at work, just ask you HR department. However, I highly recommend that you get healthcare because you never know when you'll get into a serious accident or come down with a serious illness. Even just going to the doctor for a regular checkup or for a simple cold can be very expensive. So really think about it before you decide to waive your healthcare benefits.
