I'm a woman, and I greatly prefer a female boss.

I know, I know - it shouldn't matter as long as the boss is fair (as many other answerers pointed out). BUT, I have never found a male boss to be completely fair to female employees. Really!

Even if male bosses don't do anything overtly sexist....there's always a dominance issue. Most men in power positions talk down to women (usually inadvertantly) and don't show them the same respect or comradery as they do with male employees. I feel bad saying this, because I don't think most realize they're doing it! It's just something subconscious that women can be more easily dominated. Talk down to a woman and she'll cower more easily, right? Either that or she'll come across like a b-...you-know-what.

And for our part, most of us women to play it quiet and nice because we don't want to look like a raging b**** in the workplace. I consider myself a very strong woman, but when my male bosses have started talking down to me, I knew I was trapped into acquiescing. What can I do? Accuse them of what?

Now, when I work for women...the communication is much better. I find women to be much more reasonable bosses with realistic expectations, and milder tempers. Other women never call me "dear" or "hon". They don't talk to me like I'm a child. The women all treat me like a colleague and a professional. And they generally treat the men the same way.

Even in this modern day, there still is a difference.

Here's how I'd break down the different employment combinations:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Female working under a male boss - WORST
Male working under a female boss - AVERAGE
Male working under a male boss - BETTER
Female working under a female boss - BEST
(but hey, if it's a job, I'll work for a lemur! Work is good!)
It doesn't matter to me.
As long as the person treats me and everyone else with fairness, regardless of job title, pay, perceived status, age, race, religion or creed.
My best friend now, was my boss.
Now I have my own business. I am the boss.
I am a 57 year old young lady. I treat all of my staff with care, because with no staff, there is NO business.
Even the front line receptionist is critical to the business. He or she can damage a business with unprofessional behavior.
I heard that - I'm pretty lucky with my bosses. They treat me fairly and guide me when I need help. They are fun to be around and fun to work for. I'm very happy here!
I have 2, no 3 female bosses and we get along great!
Gender is irrelevant to me-- as is age, skin color, political, religious or sexual orientation. I like working for someone who is open minded, not defensive or territorial, who hires good people and gives the control of their areas of responsibility.
In my experience it doesn't matter who your boss is, as long as he/she is fair and honest.
But I'm a male. When it comes to women in the workplace, I do think they have it a lot harder than men. Women are extremely cruel to each other, specially when competing in the workplace, and if they have a woman as a boss than can get pretty uggly, pretty quick.
I had male and female supervisors. I think their personlity made them different. I was happy with several of my male supervisors. I was happy with several of my female supervisors. With all of them I used to do the same type of job. So, I feel comfortable with both of them. It all depends on their personality in the work area.
The gender of my boss does not matter. However, I do like bosses who aren't constantly looking over my shoulder. That kind of behavior makes me nervous and irritated. I am a self starter and over achiever. To have someone constantly keeping watch over me bugs me. My performance goes way up when I have a hands-off kind of boss who just gives me my work, sits me in the corner, and lets me do it.
I have been in both situations before. I have to agree though I Loved my jobs where I could just do my work and be left alone. I do not really recall any positions that I had where my boss really looked over my shoulders and I am sure I would not have stayed if that took place. I also consider myself to be a self starter, if I have a questions tell me the answer and we are good to go. I always find my self going beyond what is expected of me and always feel UNDER PAID ! LOL
I have had good and bad of each. I look for someone who is competent that I can trust and respect. The need to be able to select competent employees who can work well together. They need to stand behind their employees when things go wrong.
When you end up with a bad boss of any gender, you have to decide whether to wait it out and hope the leave or take your experience and move on to something new.
