I feel trapped in my job and can not see a way out of it...! What do I do?

My life story if you will...

I have just woken up from many years of canabis use! I did not see a problem with this drug for many years but almost a year ago I woke up and snapped out of it only to realise that I had wasted most of my years in a paranoid fog leaving nothing to show for my years gone past apart from an overwhelming sense of under achievement and a anxiety and depression related medical condition that causes difficulty with swallowing food.

During my years in the paranoid fog I job hopped and have little to no qualifications to compliment my bleek CV. I made some stupid decisions in my green bubble including applying for the job I currently hold now. I read the job description of an exciting opportunity as the coordinator of a large office move although I have ended up working on a make shift reception in a temporary building where I am treated like something you would scrape off your shoe day in and day out. My daily duties are completely different to what I applied for and to add insult to injury... I NEVER apply for reception positions because I HATE that type of trample on you role! Being an hour drive away from home and in a completely different city (which I didn't mind when I thought I was being promoted) just adds to my total and utter dispair!

I feel trapped. I am applying for positions which I have all the experience for but don't seem to be able to get through the sift to interview stage! I have researched application techniques and got invaluable advice from a few people who work in the recruitment industry but still with no avail! What am I doing wrong!!! Is this my punishment for my previous substance mis-use?

I am currently taking a level 2 and level 3 qualification but don't feel like I can take it anymore... All I want is a bottom rung paper pushing position in a reputable company where they invest in their employees.

Anyone else having a similar problem or is it just me?

I'd suggest trying to find things you can do on the side to earn more money (e.g. tutoring elementary or middle school kids, mowing lawns, raking leaves, etc.) - whatever it takes. Put aside this money towards when you will quit your job. Try to also minimize expenses to save as much as possible of your wages.

Then, once you have enough side income to replace the portion of your wages that you don't save, quit your job and use the freed-up time to (a) ramp up your side-line work, and (b) take whatever job-training you can find from your city, county, or state. For example, using Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

Then, apply for entry level clerical positions. Your side-line income meanwhile should keep you afloat.

Good luck.

If possible, get some part time job. Try every possible way to save some money. Then you quit and do some courses in whatever field you like. Depression can make you feel lack of self confidence. Interview is to make an impression. If you can afford, ask for a chance to work in your chosen field for free. In that way you will learn the skills needed . It will lead to some thing. Oh by the way, don't call yourself stupid.
