SIT BY THE RIVER AND WRITE:
1. Romance writing - romance novels and stories. Info, conferences, local
writers groups and meetings info, etc. for U.S. is:
Romance Writers of America (they have a time lag of at least 2 years,
and if they accept the book (long odds & many revisions later, royalties
for translations for other countries globally if done will come many years later)
similar for other kinds of writing - check.

2. Mystery Writers of America
http://www.mysterywriters.org/

3. Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America
http://www.sfwa.org/

4. Freelance Writing work http://www.freelancewriting.com/

5. One stop shopping for information about writing each year in an annual book:
2009 Writer's Market (Paperback)
by Robert Brewer
http://www.amazon.com/2009-Writers-Market-Robert-Brewer/dp/1582975418/
OR online deluxe edition
http://www.amazon.com/2009-Writers-Market-Deluxe-Online/dp/1582975426/

6. OR wait for the 2010 writers market to be released
http://www.amazon.com/2010-Writers-Market-Robert-Brewer/dp/1582975795/

GO TO http://www.amazon.com put writers market in the search box and browse
if you instead want to get books on poetry, short story writing, childrens writing,
write for magazines, christian writers, guide to literary agents etc.

OTHER TOPICS OF INTEREST: writing, non fiction writing, film writing, television writing,
editing, back of book editing contract work, proofreading

BUT: Even if you write a book (could take 1-2 years) and someone accepts it for publication, and you revise it as they want to, and it is ready to publish, there is a time lag in book publication for paid publishers of often 2 years on paper (less for online), then you may get a small advance but the rest of the royalties only come some years later as the books are sold and after they count all the refunds for returns, then if it is translated in other languages it can take years after that. Then the profit from a book total may not be more than a few thousand dollars which is not even as much as what you spent researching it for paper, copying, editing services, agent fees, postage, pens, library research, travel costs, typing services, transcription services if you did not type it from your taperecorder, cost of computer, taperecorder, disks, electricity etc. Then to apply for and get a government or association grant for writing or retreat, normally you need to show a track record of previous publications, and spend time/copying/submission costs. Off hand there is a writers retreat each summer in Banff Springs Alberta Canada but each program has application time/usually fees/and even if there is a bursary or subsidy it is rare to cover full costs....so, keep your day job? put it together with other things by the river if that is where you must be....... IDEAS:

OTHER POSSIBLE FIELDS: ARTIST - oil painting, water colors, pastels, acrylic painting
ARTS/CRAFTS - knitting, wood carving, ivory carving, soapstone carving, pottery, fashion
design, jewelry making, beadwork, ornamental basket weaving, air dryed/painted art materials
sculptures, custom artisan work - eg. boat - building, quilt making, custom kite-making,
decorative lawn & garden ornaments EG. from refurbished scrapyard pieces/found items/driftwood,
painted stones, antique refinishing, etc.

OBSCURE FIELDS: flower and 4 leaf clover pressing, and/or card/bookmark/picture making,
filmmaking or photography of closeup nature - possibly also using microscopes,
organic farming - hand weeding for crops by riverbeds,
fishing to supply gourmet fresh fish for upscale restaurants,
prospecting for meteorites and comets, historical artifacts including unexploded bombs sometimes
using metal detectors in areas of historical significance or astronomical activity and selling
finds to museums, art galleries or collectors.
Panning for gold on riverbanks with historical past gold deposits or diamond mining using
a sieve and water by hand.
Pay to live in a monastery as an artist guest and do your activity of your choosing by
the riverbank until you are done EG. write your memoirs, discover a new philosophy,
write a novel or non-fiction book etc. also consider finding and joining writers retreats or
colonies, or negotiate free room and board for sheepherding duties to prevent sheep from
drowning as apparently they get startled and drown when their head is down in the water drinking.
Maybe some combination will work until the writing starts to pay - Hope that helps.

Yes, it is called being a writer. Go ahead an write all you want and then submit it to the self publishing site lulu.com and see who buys it. If many people do, then you have a new job. Good Luck!

Well, you can also opt for a cruise ship job... you can write while earning a good tax free money while traveling different seas of the world.
