Are unpaid internships a win win or just another word for slavery?

I was an intern when I was studying BS in Physical Therapy and we had 10 months internship. Most of our patients are telling us that we should be paid because we do a lot of hard work for them. But the fact is our school are paying for us in order for the hospital to accept us as interns.
We are under the supervision of a licensed PT and we learned a lot from them. Internship is just like going to school but instead of reading it is applying the skills and knowledge we learned from school.
I learned a lot from those 10 months of grueling internship and no I don't mind that I don't get paid. For me it is a win-win situation for I learned a lot in terms of handling patients and gain confidence. And I know that the license of those supervising PTs are at stake when they are supervising us. I should know better for I have been supervising students after I graduated and worked in a hospital rehabilitation department in our city.

I think interning is a win win. It gives you the experience in the career you want, kind of another chance to make sure it is what you want to do...looks good on applications/resumes. Many times the place you intern may hire you as well and then you already know the ropes and what's nicer then that?
