However, companies that are involved in helping you, the worker, find the employer are going to want a cut. That's only fair, because they're doing some work that benefits you - just stick to the guys and gals who take the cut from your pay, not up front.
We also, of course, have to be careful about check-cashing scams. They're touted as easy, work-from-home jobs that anyone can do. You just cash checks and wire money overseas, after all. They're definitely scams, and, unfortunately, some people fall for them. It's best to avoid that altogether, of course.
Now, as for legitimate job listings:
If you're into writing, editing, illustrating, programming, et cetera, there is a wide variety of postings at Elance - a large site for freelancers and potential employers to get together.
There are also Internet forums where users - often stay-at-home parents, but not always - discuss various work-from-home opportunities. One such forum that I found is at WhyDoWork.com. You don't have to pay them to join the forum, and you can browse without even registering. This is an easy way to find out what other people have already tried; ask questions if you aren't sure about something; keep up-to-date on which jobs are actually scams, et cetera.

Why don't you give a chance to something like Creative Writing or Proof-Reading? You'll find those jobs on most freelancing sites, and they're usually for a few articles. That means you get to read some interesting stuff (not always though :) and it won't take up too much of your time. In fact, it could be ideally suited for the fifteen minutes to half hour breaks you may have say, between flights.
You can pace yourslef with these kind of projects, and they pay well too! If you're interested, kindly have a look at one of my earlier answers here:

Freelancers are usually people who work in:
- Computer Programming
- Graphic Design
- Consulting
- Law
- Copywriters
If you work on one of these areas, just find job sites where you can post your own ad, and advertise your skills as a freelancer, or look for freelance postings.
Some companies are also open to the possibility of working from home, even if they ask for "normal" schedules. So don't put off applying to a regular job, but in your answer state that you would be interested in working from home. Maybe you can present a more competitive reply and be selected (you could for example ask for less money because you don't have to do the daily comute to work).

What is the best way to find a LEGITIMATE work from home job?
My ideal job would be one that would supplement my current job to start with potential to go full time. I would like it to be something I can do from my laptop as I travel. There are plenty of listings on craigslist and other sites promising such a position, but most appear to be spam. Does anyone know of a place to find legitimate listings of work at home jobs?

It's a lot easier than a lot of people want to make it out to be. The first thing is that since there are so many schemes and what not when it comes to work at home jobs people ar very skeptical. What anyone that wants a work at home job should do is 2 things. One think of work that can be done at home. Then you apply for jobs such as the ones that you were thinking of that can be done at home.

The key, in my opinion, is to eliminate any gig that requires payment from you up front. If they want you to pay them so that you can work, well, it's probably not legitimate. There are a few exceptions, but why invest your hard-earned money trying to figure out what's legit and what's not? However, companies that are involved in helping you, the worker, find the employer are going to want a cut. That's only fair, because they're doing some work that benefits you - just stick to the guys and gals who take the cut from your pay, not up front.

Thank you, everyone for your answers. Now, I think I've got quite a few good answers, and I'm not sure how to decide to whom to give the "best answer." Everyone comment or vote and let me know your thoughts.

Well, it all depends on what you want to or can do... Since you mention using a laptop even as you travel, then obviously you cant take up something that's very time consuming or strenuous. Why don't you give a chance to something like Creative Writing or Proof-Reading? You'll find those jobs on most freelancing sites, and they're usually for a few articles. That means you get to read some interesting stuff (not always though :) and it won't take up too much of your time. If your work can translate into freelance work, you can probably do it from home, with a great degree of independance. Freelancers are usually people who work in:

- Law
- Copywriters

There are a surprising number of things you can do for work from home via the internet. I sell on ebay and amazon and have a website and 2 blogs. These together earn me over 10 times what I made as a manager at my full time job. If you don't want to get into something that is not stable (can't depend on getting a check in the same amount of money every week) i would try a customer service job. Many very reputable companies hire people to work from home answering phones. You could start with J Crew! http://theworkfromhomemom.blogspot.com/

there's chacha: it doesn't cost anything but you have to sign up and agree to become a personal contractor, basically that just means you'd have to file your taxes differently. so you sign up to be a guide and you have to pass a test first. if you pass it they will have you watch some videos together its about an hour or so long. You can watch it little by little or all at once. once you're done you'll take another test. the final one before you become a guide. make sure you're ready for it you can only take it once. if you fail it you can't retake it. after you pass that you 're all set to answer questions. oh yeah your job will be to answer people's questions as they come in.

Sure, It's super easy. They train you so you'll know exactly where to go on their site. They have a special area where you can look up answers which makes it easier for you. You have to use Firefox as your browser when you're working because they give you a tool bar to install so you can site your work more easily. You'll get paid once a month when earnings total 60$ the previous month. So, if you earned 65$ in Jan. you would get paid Feb. If what you earn is less than $60 than they will accumulate it with the coming month. So, if you earned $55 January you would get it together with your Feb. earnings in March. Pay is per answer ranging from $.05 to $.10 and payments are made by direct deposit. If you're curious what kind of questions you'll be getting you can go on the website and they'll have question that are being asked live. Most are easy, some are funny. The nice thing is you can put a little personality into the answers. Chacha is free if you have unlimited texting so I would recommend that one. Check out the sites.
I really like that with Chacha you can work whenever you want as much as you want. You also don't have to compete for best answers like here in Mahalo Answer.

In the Book "Start Late, finish Rich", the author suggests two options for making money while keeping your day job: real estate (rental properties) and a franchise. The author states that their are a number of franchises that have 10k licenses plus tax plus start up fees. The franchises are businesses that you walk into a start interacting with clients. Expect about a year before breaking even or turning a profit. Keeping your day job and having savings becomes important.
