Retained recruiter fees are approximately 30% of annual compensation of the open position plus expenses. Billing is done over the first 3 months of the search. Contingency is about the same, but paid upon successful placement.

Retained recruiters have a relationship with the employer and actively seek to fill the open position. Contingency agencies may not be actively promoting open positions.

Fees and structure of payment can vary by industry. Supply and demand of qualified executives or technologists in a particular niche will affect the cost and length of search.
