Pure silver doesn't tarnish. Sterling silver tarnishes if it is in contact with air.
(Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure Silver and 7.5% another metal(normally copper). As pure silver doesn't tarnish, it is the other metal(copper) which causes tarnishing in sterling silver.)

Pure silver tarnishes faster than Sterling. This was the reason sterling was invented, it is mixed with a slight amount of coper to help prevent tarnishing, jus t look at the pure silver eating utensils that grandma is always polishing.
