I think that in many cases it depends on the setting and how they are matched. On a personal basis, I think that good quality black pearls are the best. There is just something about the iridescence and the luster of a black pearl.
The most valuable type of pearls are black pearls with green overtones. These are produced by the black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) in the islands of French Polynesia. Green overtones on black pearls have almost twice the market value as black pearls with no such overtone.
