Lots of albums to choose from, and among those are many "classics."

I'd say start out with "Kind of Blue." Accessible to jazz newbies, hailed by jazz connoisseurs, and Miles has a kickin' band that includes Coltrane, Bill Evans, and Cannonball Adderly.

While most people start their Miles Davis journey with the classic "Kind of Blue" album (never a bad choice), the album really only gives a picture of a small period of Davis' work.
If you are a fan of Bebop music, you should definitely check out his 1957 album Birth of the Cool.

If you are a fusion and rock fan, try one of his fusion era masterpieces, probably "Bitches Brew" would be best.

If you enjoy a little Spanish-Flavor, my personal favorite is the album Sketches of Spain.

I love anything with Miles Davis, but if I were starting out to learn about Davis, I'd start with the Quintet John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano; Paul Chambers on double bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

Here's one of my favorites, completely tasty, a version of Round Midnight that starts off with Davis playing it straight and then just cascades off into exploration.
