Rashied Ali was one of the drummers for John Coltrane. He was a free-jazz drummer who studied with Philly Joe Jones and an admirer of Art Blakey. If you are looking for other free-jazz drummer, I would suggest:
1) Jack DeJohnette
2) Billy Higgins
3) Brian Blades
If you are looking for other free-jazz musicians who do not play drums, check out:
1) Ornette Coleman
2) Eric Dolphy
Also, be sure to check out the documentary, Imagine the Sound.
