Jayson Werth of the Philadelphia Phillies is in the final year of his contract and having a great season thus far. I was wondering
if anyone thinks the Phillies will make a serious attempt to resign him, given that they dished out $125 million for Ryan Howard through 2017. If Werth isn't resigned, speculation is that Dominic Brown will be the rightfielder in 2011. I think the Phillies should try to resign Werth because Raul Ibanez wont be playing that much longer, I wouldn't think at his age, then the team has two outfield gaps to fill. Any thoughts on what the team should do?

In recent seasons Jayson Werth has made himself into a pretty good hitter, but not great. It appears his power production goes right along with the number of plate appearances he makes in a season. His .330+ average so far this year, and based on history is probably an anomaly rather than the norm. In my opinion the Philadelphia Phillies should make every effort to resign him. He is a solid outfielder and hitter and the team needs to be sure that they have an adequate replacement if they decide not to pursue him in the off-season. It would not be easy losing the 36 home runs and 99 RBIs he produced last year, and at thirty-one years of age he has some really good years left and also fits well into the Philadelphia lineup. Anyway, why would they not want to resign a player with a nickname of “Werewolf”, as long as the money and contract are fair to both parties? Domonic Brown, the player you mentioned as his replacement is off to a good start at Double A Reading with 7 home runs and a .337 batting average, but I am not sure that translates into being able to replace Werth right out of the gate.

I agree they should try to resign him and also Dominic Brown is a left handed hitter in a lineup that is left handed heavy as it is. Werth is much more valuable to the Phillies than many realize. He is protection behind Ryan Howard too. But Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr wonders how many players they can have with the huge salary that Werth would command. They already have a huge payroll. We'll see. But yes, I think they should resign him.
