I've never played poker before. What should I know going into my first game?
What's the quickest way to not lose in poker?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think the first thing anyone needs to learn about poker is knowing the very basics, such as what each hand means and the rankings of the hands. From the lowest to the highest, the hands rank as follows: high card if noone has a minimum of a pair (ace being the highest card, two being the lowest), pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush. If you are unsure what each hand is, go to http://www.pokerlistings.com/poker-hand-ranking for complete explaination on each hand.
You will also need to know about betting and the types of games available. Texas Hold'em is the big game today, but there is also stud poker and draw poker, such as 7 card stud and 5 card draw. In draw poker you can bet after all the cards are dealt and after you either draw some cards or hold. In stud poker, you can bet after each card is drawn. Note that in stud poker you cannot throw in any cards and draw new cards like in draw poker.
Check out any poker guide that you can find in a bookstore for more information on all the games.
