More specifics:
I'm currently asking $750 for the whole deal. This is my first time selling a laptop online so be kind. :)

If you're a facebook user, you might consider listing your laptop on there. I know some friends who have successfully sold things via facebook. Here is a link that lists 5 facebook apps designed to help you sell stuff:

As for the price, I think it is way too much. I don't know what type of laptop you have, but I have about a year old tx1000z with very similar specs that I bought for $800 something NEW. (It's now dead, but that's neither here nor there.) Personally, I would pay about $400-450 for it.

Yes, electronics depreciate fairly quickly. What model is it?

Warranty and extra battery = things you may never need.

People that are buying used to save money don't pay extra for things they may never need.

You might be able to sell the battery seperately though.

You can always try Craigslist. Also, if you post the specs/price with your question, we can help determine if you're' just overcharging, too.

No luck with Craiglist. I've either gotten the crazy "mail to Africa" replies or wanting to pay with some weird payment. :(

You price is technically fair for the components/touchscreen. However, it IS a year and a half old and used. In this economy, it's hard to justify paying $750 for a NEW computer, much less a used one. Also, though the touchscreen/tablet adds nice functionality, there are few actual uses for it (draping, taking notes). Most professionals in areas that need those things usually would rather buy them new.

I HATE to say this (really), but you might have to drastically reduce the price.

There are a few places I know of..
backpage.com (similar to craigslist)
craigslist.com
mycovetbay.com - like ebay - but no fees.

And I agree - selling a 2nd hand laptop for that much? I bought my laptop from Best Buy in 2007 - Came with Vista, brand new, super fast, is a compaq presario - paid $600
You may want to re-consider the price...

Also, try looking locally for a computer store that buys old computers.... They generally are good. I sold an old computer and got a pretty decent price. You wont get anything near what you are asking- but they price it off of your memory, rams, and etc..

Good luck!

A new semester is starting soon at local colleges around the country. This generally means that some students have a couple of bucks for books or at least haven't spent all of their money on beer yet.

I'd walk around "the quad" or common areas for a couple of days with the laptop in hand asking people if they'd like to buy it. Bring the original receipt if you have one so that folks don't think you've just picked it up and are hawking it.

This "out of the back of a van" thing generally works. You just have to find the right person and be willing to negotiate.

I also second the above poster re: craigslist. I've sold a lot of used electronics locally via craigslist. If you live in a densely populated area, then the number of offers will be greater, although the number of interested parties not going through with the transactions is also a bit higher, from personal experience. That's not really a big deal unless you want sell the laptop by a particular date.

Since they come to you to buy and pick up the laptop, they can inspect the condition of the laptop and verify the information you posted. I think this is great for the buyer because they can always back out if it didn't meet their expectations, or, better yet, negotiate a lower price. :)

For the price that you're asking, I have a feeling that you will have a hard time selling that on craigslist, though. Most of the people on craigslist want to buy a cheap low-end computer for home or school use. $750 is a steep price to pay for buying a second-hand laptop (even a high end one) when they can purchase a brand new, lower speck one for far less.

As for price, I think the buyer pool will determine that. You can post it for the price you want and see if anyone bites. If not, then it's time to lower it until you get offers. This will be a waiting game so I hope you're not in any hurry to unload the laptop.

as an aside, I know i wrote "lower spec" instead of "lower speck" on my original post. Calacanis' editing team may have been too overzealous? :)

Watch ebay for a little while and see what prices laptops roughly like that actually go for. I'm afraid it'll be probably be a lot less than $750.

Maybe watch how this one does, a Toshiba tablet with current bid of $229.:

People aren't going to pay a lot more for extras like spare batteries and extended warranties.

I'd give it to a church or other charitable entity and take the tax deduction.   I'm not sure why anyone would buy used computer equipment with all the decent new stuff out there

It has not sold because your price is too high. You can buy better machines for less now. Why would someone pay $750 for your machine.

You best bet to sell this is to use a personal relationship and "pursuade" the person that you can help them make it successful. AKA, the value add of your support can help support that price. If only viewed as a commodity, there value is not there.

Doing a little searching around, I found a new option called iList. I thought it might be worth a shot. It looks like it links up with twitter, pownce, facebook... etc. Best of luck!  I also agree, though, the price is too much for what you're selling.
