I've been reading about Allyl isothiocyanate, the thing in mustard that makes it burn your nose. Is this good for you?

I read that the capsaicins in jalapenos are what make our tongues burn, and that this helps speed up metabolism. Not sure if the Allyl isothiocyanate has the same effect. Anybody know? Hard to find with a Google search.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Capsaicins cause vesicles (little packages) of Substance P (a pain neurotransmitter) to break, and nerve cells then leak substance P into nearby tissues. This creates the perception of pain, even though no damage has actually occurred.

I believe that things like mustard, horseradish, and wasabi contain mercaptans and other related sulphurous compounds. I'm not sure how these chemically cause irritation, but I'm almost positive that they don't work anything like capsaicins.
