It seems to me that Mahalo needs disambiguation pages like wikipedia. Anybody care to comment?

It also seems that they would be easy enough to build, and maybe owning one would be a key to a lot of M$.

For example, I have created a page 'Ipswich, Queensland' to differentiate it from other places called Ipswich. On the other hand, I created 'Katoomba' rather than 'Katoomba, New South Wales' because in that case the state it redundant. I don't like the inconsistency though.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There is certainly scope for ambiguity.

For example, I claimed Star Trek, and it's not clear whether the page is or should be about only the original series ("TOS"), the whole Star Trek franchise, or cover the new movie or the older Star Trek: The Motion Picture as well.

Especially ambiguous as naturally all the automated stuff that is grabbed like Flickr pictures and YouTube videos doesn't make these distinctions at all!

Also it turns out there are pages for iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPod, Apple iPod etc.

And people can come along anytime and make their own page with a slightly different name than one that already exists.

So some way of resolving these issues does seem to be needed.

I agree that disambiguation pages are essential for a massive information archive like Mahalo. For now, go with your heart with the titles, we are no where near as big as Wikipedia... yet... so it's not a great concern right at this moment. Glad were on the same page though.

I'm guessing, then, that not many of you have run into the problem. I have run into the problem with at least half my pages. I have 3 place names that are ambiguous, and 2 titles which are also a generic terms (one of which is both a movie and a computer game, unrelated).

I could go ahead and create a disambiguation page.

True, I was thinking about this issue last night and thinking about my page "Mobile AL".

Mobile AL should also be Mobile Ala and Mobile Alabama...

I know the pages are by name, but maybe some titles should be merged due to variations in search terms....

OR maybe there should be a way to claim those terms and just redirect them to your page -that way I don't have to build 3 pages for Mobile AL (a town that deserves only one page..)

I agree with Phil and Jeff that (a need for) disambiguation pages will naturally arise as the system grows.

I also think that the best way to go about it is to let it grow organically, monitor the process, stir it, and guide it gently, as it expands and gets evermore complex. Trying to plan such a potentially huge information database all in advance, would be quite impossible and counterproductive.

I feel Mahalo has a ways to go before its organization structure will be easy to navigate. I'm just starting on this system, and I think it's a great idea, especially since so much of it is human run by individuals like us. I think the key to Wikipedia's success is it's minimal interface. It's a simple online encyclopedia. Mahalo can follow suit to make the pages less "crowded" in my opinion.
