It is possible, in the near future, to find a cure for cancer?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think we are making great strides in 'preventing' cancer. Some cancers may never be curable BUT they may be preventable. Take for example the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccine. Ovarian cancers are largely due to four specific types of HPV: HPV types 16 and 18, and also types 6 and 11. "Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA can be identified in at least 95% of dysplastic and malignant cervical lesions. HPV subtypes 16 and 18 are isolated most frequently in invasive squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, respectively." (Goldman) If all young women are vaccinated for HPV - the number of ovarian cancer victims will dramatically shrink, if not almost disappear.

Everyday researchers are finding out that viruses are one of the likely culprits behind cancer (besides diet and lifestyle choices). As these viruses are discovered - it is possible for vaccines to be developed (like the HPV vaccine) that will prevent cancer from ever occurring.

According to Molokhia and Perkins, "currently human papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) are viruses for which vaccination is indicated for cancer prevention. These viruses are causative agents for cervical and hepatic cancers, respectively. Although there are other infections that have been linked to cancer, like Epstein Barr virus as a cause of Burkitt's lymphoma and gastroadenocarcinoma and Helicobacter pylori as a causative agent in development of stomach cancer, there has yet to be approved vaccines for these agents."

It's POSSIBLE, but highly unlikely. Cancer research & treatment is big business, big bucks - too many people making money off of it to encourage anyone to actually make a cure available. Some say there are already cures for cancer, but they are not being used because of the money factor.

Researchers are now closer to cures for various kinds of cancers than they have been in a long time. There are some therapies not common in the U.S. that do work, but aren't money makers because they do not contain patentable components. And realistically, companies can't go putting billions into research if there is not going to be a return on the money. That research is ongoing at clinics in other countries, so it's going a bit more slowly.

There are many of different types of cancers,
so it wouldn't just be one cure.
I think it's possible to cure/control some types now.

I think a longer, more thought out answer with some citations would help the user a lot more @263236

Thanks for trying!
