Isn't barnraising supposed to be a volutary community-activity?

I just got back from my holiday, and was (pleasantly) surprised to see the barnraising activity. I think it is a good idea, but was wondering whether the 'barnraising' is actually what Mahalo is trying to achieve.
As far as I know, barnraising is an activity where each and every community member participates voluntarily, and without monetary incentive. Focus is on the many participants who all do a bit to create a whole.

However, the current 'barnraising' is more of a contest, where the highest volume workers are awarded. So, this is more of a competition, focussing on a few doing a lot.

So, do you think 'barnraising' is the correct term for the page-building contest?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've never raised a barn, or even lived anywhere near a barn, but I think the owner of the barn can use whatever tactics he chooses to get the neighbors to come help. I bet most barn owners at least provide beer or other beverages for their raisers, Mahalo just couldn't figure out how to give us beer over the internet.

So, do the amish allow beer? I though not. Without beer, what incentive would the new owner use, other than 'good will' ?

What about people like me, who don't like beer?
Money is the only attractive factor, every one interested in receiving.
