Zero-point energy is the energy of a system at absolute zero, with all quantum systems (such as atomic nuclei and their orbiting electrons) at their lowest energy levels. It has many of the properties of dark energy, including acting as a repulsive force which would accelerate the expansion of the universe. However, depending on the frequency spectrum of zero-point energy, there may be too much of it to serve as dark energy; if zero-point energy were driving the expansion, the universe would have exploded into oblivion with the Big Bang. An alternative theory suggests a way around this problem such that zero-point energy could still be the same as dark energy; there is currently no evidence to support it, but upcoming experiments should be sensitive enough to resolve this question.

What I would find very interesting is, if zero point energy could be captured and used to produce power.

One proof that zero point energy exist is through super cooling a chamber with compress gas. The great confinement of the molecule would intuitive tell you both its speed and position. However, the uncertainty principle prevents both speed and position from being known. At best only a statistical map of position can be known.

As temperature is reduced to zero, the molecules continue to move. The molecule does not occupy a single position at a single time. The molecule occupies all positions in the chamber. Cool stuff. The conclusion is infinite amount of energy must exist at zero point: Feynman calculated 108th power joules per cubic centimeter.

The helium gas is cool to -273 C. The helium remains liquid.

Zero point energy will transform everything. With unlimited energy the sky is the limit.
