Is washing soda the same as pure baking soda?
Which one is more alkaline? Can I substitute one for the other?

Hello mmng23,
Washing soda is different from pure baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. Also it cannot be substituted for baking soda because it is more caustic. With a pH value of 11, washing soda is much more alkaline than baking soda which ranks at 8.1 on the pH scale. Sometimes washing soda or sodium carbonate is used as part of lye to treat foods, but it cannot be used for baking. However, baking soda is often used by people when doing their laundry as it can help remove mild grease dirt and stains from laundry. Washing soda on the other hand can be used for stains and dirt that are extremely hard to get rid of, but note it can degrade cloth and other materials over time.
