Is walking a dog an important issue in dog grooming?

My neighbors’ grandfather had a borzoi that lived with him for 18 years. Many veterinarians and dog breeders said that was a very long life span for borzoi dog. The dog has never been walked. It only loves to stay with the old man, who was bed ridden. The dog was bought as a companion dog for the sick man, and I think what started as puppy love grew to a profound affection for its owner. The dog died at 18 years, few weeks after the old man died. So what I don’t understand is how a dog of that breed can live that long without been walked. The only physical exercise was playing ‘’fetch’’ and going around the big house. I used to think walking a dog could help extend its lifespan, but now I’m confused.

It's very interesting that the dog lived so long without regular walking but the Borzoi breed, although active when outside, does adapt extremely well to apartment living.

Most sites I've researched for this answer say that while indoors the dogs are nearly cat-like, being very quiet, peaceful and inactive. If the dog was bought as a puppy and lived its entire life quietly it will get used to it. I guess its like humans that way - less activity means its slows down somewhat and copes with being indoors.

They are very sensitive to change and desire companionship rather than romping around on their own. Mind you, if they do get outdoors they can roam and should be leased at all times. I think your grandfather's companion understood it lived a quiet life and became accustomed to its lifestyle. And I'm sure he was very well looked after and that helped him live a long life.
