Is vaginitis sexually transmitted? How is vaginitis treated?
Hormonal vaginitis includes atrophic vaginitis usually found in postmenopausal or postpartum women. Sometimes it can occur in young girls before puberty. In these situations the estrogen support of the vagina is poor. Irritant vaginitis can be caused by allergies to condoms, spermicides, soaps, perfumes, douches, lubricants and semen. It can also be caused by hot tubs, abrasion, tissue, tampons or topical medications. Foreign Body Vaginitis: Foreign bodies (most commonly retained tampons or condoms) cause extremely malodorous vaginal discharges.

Vaginitis is a term used to refer to any infection or inflammation of the vagina and there are some types that is caused by STD but most are due to fungus and overgrowth of bacteria.
There are several kinds of vaginitis each with their own causes and symptoms. These are:
1. Candida or yeast infections caused by too much fungus in the vagina. There will be water and thick white discharge that is often odorless. Usually treated with anti-yeast cream or suppository placed within the vagina.
2. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that is usually present in the vagina. There will be thin milky discharge and often presents without symptoms. This is treated with antibiotic to kill the bad bacteria. A medicine will be prescribed by the doctor since there is no over-the-counter antibiotic for this.
3. Trichomoniasis is a type of vaginitis that is a sexually transmitted and caused by a single-cell parasite. There will be vaginal itching, burning, and soreness of the vagina and vulva and burning sensation when urinating. Treatment is with antibiotic
4. Non-infectious vaginitis is caused by allergies or reaction to irritation from vaginal douches, spermicidal product, soaps, detergents, and fabric softeners. There will be burning, itching, or vaginal discharge even if there is no infection. Treatment for this is to cease the use of the product that creates irritation to the vagina. A medicated cream is also provided to help control the symptoms.
