Is there such thing as a seaweed (nori) allergy? Anyone know the symptoms of such an allergy?

Previous to 11 months ago, I never had a problem eating sushi. Then, suddenly, after having not had sushi for a while, I ate some and it made my stomach hurt. Every time since then, sushi has caused my stomach to feel weird. I've never thrown up from it, but it feels pretty weird/bad. This is with any type of sushi. The types of sushi I eat only have three things in common: they all have rice, I'm pretty sure they all have avocado, and they all have seaweed paper/nori. I don't eat avocado very much, but guacamole has never bothered me. I eat rice pretty often as well, and that doesn't bother me. Therefore, this leads me to believe that I have some sort of allergy to seaweed/nori. Does this kind of allergy even exist?

Yes. My mother ate three packs of small bite sized nori snack sheets and had to get sent to the hospital because she was shaking, had the chills, found it hard to breathe, and started feeling sick overall.
She is normally fine eating a roll of sushi but I guess she had one too many nori sheets this time

You could be allergic to the seaweed or any of the additives they apply on it to make commercial nori.

Yet you're more likely allergic to tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that live in laver forests and farms.

Symptoms should be similar to those of shrimp allergy.

Here you are, wicked little culprit..

I can absolutely, positively confirm that I am not allergic to shrimp. I live in southern Louisiana and I have been eating shrimp and other shellfish all of my life without any issues.

Thanks for your reply though! :)
