Is there such thing as a marijuana addiction?

For example, if someone has been smoking everyday for the past 10 years? Are there side effects, withdrawal and is it possible to come out of this habit without repercussions?

Is Marijuana an addiction? The answer is Yes and No, according to an article I've read at addict-help.com.

Yes, marijuana is an addiction like any powerful, mood-altering substance people who are susceptible to chemical dependency can become addicted to marijuana.
For certain individual who have tendencies to be dependent, the answer is "Yes." There are countless people all over the world how smoke marijuana almost everyday for some at least and its has a chemical THC or tetrahydrocannabinol which is a powerful psychoactive and alters the mood of a person who use it.

On the other hand, "No" Marijuana is not an Addiction problem because some people can use it on occasions and can quit using it for extended periods of time and some were able to quit using it altogether. For these people the answer is "No."

One major characteristic of marijuana is that it is very mild and subtle that you can use it daily or for an extended period of time and forget about it. And for some person who are prone to dependency they don't completely realize that they have become dependent on it.

The bottom line is long-term marijuana abuse can lead to addiction. Meaning if a person is a compulsive user and abuse it despite its harmful effects on social functioning with regards to family, school, work, and recreational activities. Those who are long-term marijuana abusers who have tried to quit experienced irritability, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, anxiety, craving for the drug, which makes it very difficult to quit. These usually occurs 1 day after abstaining from it and peaks at 2-3 days and subsides within 1 - 2 weeks after drug cessation.

YES!!! I have seen it and know many people that could vouch for this being true. There is THC in it so there is chemicals in it that can become addicting. The feeling is another thing that can become addicting. Marijuana is a downer, so a lot of people experience a relaxing feeling, which is nice for those super stressed out. I knew someone who would try and quite, and within a day was grumpy and mean, and just so different than when he was smoking. I know there are many people out there that would say it's not, but I think they are kidding themselves becuase it is an ihibitor and does change the way you feel, and anything that changes anything in your body can become addicting. Hope this helps!

In addition to the above, it doesn't necessarily need to have an addictive ingredient: people can get addicted to the way it makes them feel, and thus not want to stop.

I totally agree with ashtenmeadows .
The studies I've seen point to this as a psychological addiction, which can be equally discomforting, not necessarily a chemical dependence. Addiction is addiction, just like with gambling.
When I quit smoking tobacco, I gradually weaned myself off and in a month I didn’t suffer from the chemical addiction. It took another 2 to not smoke at all.
