Is there such a thing as the best musician of all time?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No. there is no one best musician of all time but there are many truly great ones.

The thing is, it is subjective, what constitutes a great musician to one person is different from someone elses ideas.

Not only that there are so many types of music, personally, I can't stand rap or hip-hop, (I'm not even sure what the difference is, if any) but an aficionado of the genre, would undoubtedly consider that one of his favorites would be the best artist in the history of man!

I love rock music, but I would find it difficult to choose a best rock guitarist, there are so many superb artists, how do you choose between Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or U2s brilliant Edge, to name but a few!

I really don't think it is that important to even try to say who is the best, I just think we are so fortunate to live in an age where we can listen to and enjoy all the brilliant musicians of the past and present with so many forms of equipment, either in the home or out and about.

As Enigmatic has said, it's completely subjective and we should feel lucky that we have all these music artists at the touch of your fingers tips. Also, you have to weigh their artistic quality against their technical abilities, which are often at different ends of the spectrum when determining their "bestness". If you're curious about who are "considered" the best musicians in a technical sense (jazz and classical musicians not included, I don't have enough knowledge to do them justice), I would say the most popular answers are as follows:

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (great composer, but highly noted for his ability to play as well)
2. Richard D. James (the skittering electronic beats and music of Aphex Twin)
3. Jimi Hendrix (hazy electric guitar dipped in distortion)
4. Keith Moon (mad man drummer for The Who)
5. Geddy Lee (versatile bassist for Rush)
6. Eddie Van Halen (guitarist for Van Halen)
7. Jimmy Page (guitarist for Led Zeppelin)
8. Les Claypool (bassist and leader of the band Primus)
9. Jaco Pastorius (renowned bassist)
10. Vinny Colaiuta (renowned drummer)
11. Stewart Copeland (drummer for the Police and others)
12. Pat Metheny (respected guitarist)
13. Flea (bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers)
14. Victor Wooten (famous bassist)
15. Dave Mustaine (guitarist for Megadeth)

Phew, and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

No. Music, like art, is very subjective. What is "good music" to you may not be good to others. It all depends on how the music makes you feel. Some music may make you feel good, but will not give others the same effect.
