Is there such a thing as computer vision syndrome?

Last night, I went early to bed due to terrible headache, back neck pain and I felt like throwing up. This has made me think of buying prescription computer glasses because I suspect it’s my eyes that cause me to experience it and because I spent too much time in front of the computer. I also have read about computer vision syndrome and I’m worrying my condition is almost severe. Has anyone heard of this syndrome?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Yes, there is such a thing as computer vision syndrome (CVS), it is a multi-faceted condition of the eye that is caused by constant staring and usage of the desktop. CVS usually shows up wherein the the amount of time looking at the monitor outpaces the allowable period. This syndrome is commonly experienced by people that utilizes video terminals regularly.

CVS, however is often overlooked due to other conditions experienced by employees such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, neck tension syndrome, de Quervain's disease and trigger finger. Employees experiencing CVS in their work have significantly affected their productivity.

Accordingly, health circles have been confused on the magnitude of this eye condition experienced by employees using the monitors because of conflicting statements from various stakeholders.

"In order to improve communication and understanding of the vision problems at computers, the American Optometric Association supports the use of the term "Computer Vision Syndrome" (CVS) to broadly encompass the visual problems experienced at VDTs."
