Is there such a thing as a short hair german shepherd? If there is, I want one.

Yes, there is! They are called Beauceron or French Shorthaired Shepherd.

They are beautiful dogs, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to get one where you are... unless you're in France.

There are some breeders

It works!...the comment box that is.

They are beautiful! Thank you for the name. I want one soooo badly now. My husband was nervous that it might beat up on our cat, but I showed him a couple of beauceron and cat interactions. He smiled...so...who knows.

That's funny... I can see your comment in my email notification, but not here on the thread. I found at least three funny Beauceron and kitty videos on Youtube, they seem to love each other!

There are three recognized coat lengths for German Shepherds: short, plush and long. The pictures below are in that same order. Unfortunately, just to confuse us, some people also use the terms of standard, stock, close, mole, and smooth. I think the problem is that GSDs became such a popular breed that with so many people breeding them, a few breeders came up with different words to differentiate their dogs from everybody else's.

Check the first of the sources below - it has lots of pictures of different "types" within the German Shepherd breed as well as a few of their "cousins" of similar breeds. ... genetically speaking, it's really quite fascinating to see how their coat lengths and body structures are similar and different.

The advantage of choosing such a popular breed is that you're almost guaranteed to be able to find exactly what you're looking for. If googling doesn't turn up much, you can probably get some easy answers from a designated GSD forum, such as: http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum/ . Or a yahoo group: http://pets.dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/German_Shepherd_Dogs/?v=1&t=directory&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=dir&slk=1 .
