Is there pacifism in Islam? And if so, why don't we hear more about it?

It seems like all we ever hear about on the news is the militant side of Islam: Jihad, terrorism, a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie, violent protests against the portrayal of Mohammed in a cartoon, and so on. Sure, there's usually some pundit from some organization brought in to say that Islam is a peaceful religion, and that the others represent the radical fringe, but overall, in the U.S. and Western Europe, the militant image is the dominant image.

So, is there pacifism in Islam? What did Mohammed say about peace in the Quran? And by peace, I mean peace, period, not just through converting the entire world to Islam.

And if Islam has a philosophy of pacifism, why don't we hear more about it in the news? Or in our local communities?

I'm not an expert at Islam, someone who knows the Quran would be able to help you out a lot more than me... I thought I'd just point out something.

There are plenty of people all over the world that are having a fabulous and normal day today, but the news tonight is going to tell us about terrorists, missing children, and murders. It may just be human nature to be interested in things that are out of the norm like that, or perhaps normality just doesn't give good ratings (probably the latter, mostly). Either way, the news only has thirty or so minutes to report everything going on in the world - it would be difficult for them to report the mundane and the abormal all in one night.

True, there are a lot of very influential people in other religions, Islam seems to be lacking. I think the reason for this is twofold (again, I'm basing this on conjecture - anyone's welcome to chime in). First, Islam is not quite as popular as Christianity or Judaism, meaning the great works being done by Yusuf Islam are not quite as well-known. The same is almost true of Buddhism, though why the Dalai Lama is more famous I think has to do with my reason number two. Islam is much, much more divided than other religions. Christianity has its sects, to be sure, but no major wars have broken out over them in quite some time. I think this is why Islamic violence is much more known than its peace, whereas other religions that are more unified have much less violence being reported in the news and consequently more air time for their good deeds.

As for why Muslims themselves are not taking action... you would have to ask a Muslim. I don't know each individual's reasons for not being publicly annoyed or outraged at the terrorists causing their bad reputation.

True, but other religions have prominent, well-known figures out promoting peace. When we think Buddhism and peace, we think of the Dalai Lama (or Buddha himself); Hinduism and peace, Gandhi and his descendants, or Amma; Christianity and peace, Mother Theresa or the entire sects of Mennonites, Quakers, etc.; Judaism, Elie Wiesel, Noam Chomsky, etc.

Who are the modern voices for Islamic pacifism? Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), is probably the closest I can think of. He's won numerous peace awards for his many and varied efforts. And yet, his public exposure as a Muslim was marred by his part in the Salman Rushdie controversy, which many people have never seen past.

If any other religion had been involved in something like a dozen terrorist plots against New York City alone in the past decade (heard on CNN this morning), every spiritual leader from that religion would be out denouncing the terrorists and calling on every sane, righteous follower to do everything they can to expose these plots and put an end to them.

I'm just not seeing that from the Muslim community. I know they're not all in support of the terrorists, but why isn't there more public outrage in the Muslim community, not against the prejudice and bigotry in their direction, but against the terrorists and other Islamic militants who are causing it?

My dear friend,
This is a huge question that needs a huge book to answer it!!! Why you always hear about the militant side of Islam??? As a Moslem, I think that this is what they want you to hear about it!? Media these days are not perfect as it should be! As you know it’s owned by people who are trying to impose their point of view for certain reasons.
Any ways your question leads to an other! Why some moslems are acting the way you see it? And why now?

A very interesting question which probably requires deep analysis. since i'm no Islam expert, i'll give a simplist answer. there are about 15 million Jews in the world and we all know the importance they give to education, the number of universities they have. there are more than 1 billion Muslims in the world, do you know about any famous Islamic university that is known for its research or quality of education. no. there isn't. you don't hear about the positive side of Islam because Muslims do not have enough intellectuals to defend it, whether in print, multimedia or otherwise. so ultimately we only get to hear or see what enemies of Islam want to portray Muslims, that is demonizing them in view to take political advantage.
