Is there anything wrong with having brass countertops in the kitchen?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No there is nothing wrong with brass countertops in your kitchen. It just depends on what you consider to be "wrong"? I own a company that makes brass countertops and the first thing I do is to educate prospective customers on what to expect. Brass, like copper and zinc, reacts to its environment. Therefore, water, tomato sauce, lemons and other acids that you will find in the kitchen will react with the brass. You need to keep in mind that there is a difference between polished and clean. You can clean the surface, but it might still show spots.
The "right" thing about brass is that it has a high concentration of copper in it and copper has been proven by EPA as being anti-microbial. Brass has some of these effects as well. Therefore, brass is a better choice than some other materials such as concrete or marble.
As with most metal surfaces, we don't recommend regular food preparation directly on them.

I wouldn't recommend brass as a countertop material because it can reacts with its environment and requires a lot of care. There are many other better choices, such as quartz, stone, recycled glass, stainless steel and even recycled paper.
