The two factors affecting screen visibility are glare, and a lack of contrast between the ambient (sun)light and the screen.

It's not an insurmountable problem as many devices with LCD screens are used in direct sunlight, especially in the military/industrial arena

You could try

- Coating the screen in something that reduces glare. Some screens come with a matt finish, or you could apply a stick on filter, such as the 3M products mentioned above, or you could get a machine with a transreflective display, though these tend to be either Tablet or Ruggedised machines

- Wearing polarised lenses, as these are designed to reduce glare - seemed to work for me over the weekend

- Shade the screen with something like a Hoodman, or a cutout cardboard box.

I'd be careful using a machine outside in direct sunlight for too long however, most machines aren't designed to work properly outside 'office-like' ambient temperatures , Direct sunlight can heat up internal components to the point that they fail.

I use a cardboard box that I cut to look just like this!

I got the box at my grocery store. It works great.

There are a few different sun shades, sun visors, etc. that you could buy to help with this issue.

For example this sunshade from buy.com for $25:

Or this sun visor for $25

Or you could make your own using a cardboard box!

Here's what I would do:

1. As the others mentioned, use a cardboard box. This helps to keep the sunlight out.

2. Sit in a chair facing towards the sun, with the screen facing away from the sun. You might get sun in your eyes, but you won't get any on the screen. I'd wear sunglasses.

3. You could get someone who is 6'9" to stand in front of you to block the sun.

4. You could rub sunscreen on the screen. It'll smear all over the screen, but hey, at least you don't have any sunlight reflecting on the screen! ;)

5. Lastly, if you can't find any other ridiculous way of blocking sunlight, you could always go inside and sit by a nice, big window in a cozy chair or sofa.

An anti-glare computer screen is designed to cut down on the amount of light that reflects off the display.

I will suggest a Cardboard box a bit bigger in size to your laptop. Keep your Laptop in it and go! You will be able so see everything as your screen will be under shade.

No offense, but these products look really tacky and lame.

1. You can always get a special foil that makes it matte
3. Try to find a wall socket somewhere close by. The reason for this is that high luminosity usually means high power consumption (screens need the most energy in a laptop).
4. Consider either buying or DIYing a 'laptop hood'. This is white on the outside (to reduce heat buildup) and black on the inside (to reduce glare). Or, you can stick your laptop into a simple cardboard box. This will prevent heat build-up for the laptop and other items, such as USB mice.
5. Find a bit of shade if possible and experiment with different angles to find the position which gives you the best readability.

Hi Shaz, unfortunately there is not a lot you can do. The fact that the sun is so much brighter than your tiny screen generally makes out-doors viewing difficult. There are products called "laptop sun shades" or "laptop sun shields" (for example: http://www.laptopsunshade.com/) that help reduce the amount of light hitting the screen. I've heard mixed reviews on the helpfulness of these products, plus you need to carry an extra thing around, but it might work out well for you if you don't mind. Good luck!

I should turn my laptop around so sunlight is not shining on my screen! I mean, it is a laptop, why buy something if the easiest solution makes use of one of the key features of your laptop: mobility! Look for a spot with shade and set your laptop there to work :-)
