Is there any way to download music from an Ipod to the computer...music that was NOT bought from the Ipod store?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You don't need software - that kind of software often has viruses/spyware.

NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK IF THE IPOD IS MAC FORMATTED AND YOU'RE USING A WINDOWS PC.

1. Open iTunes.
2. HOLD CONTROL AND SHIFT and plug your iPod in. KEEP HOLDING THE BUTTONS UNTIL YOUR IPOD SHOWS UP. If prompted to format, click NO.
3. Click your iPod and check "Enable disk use."
4. Open up My Computer (Windows XP), Computer (Vista) or Finder (Mac).
5. If you're on Windows, click Tools > Folder Options, click the View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," and click OK. If you're on a Mac, open Terminal, type
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
press Return, and log out and back in.
6. Your iPod should now show up as a drive in My Computer/Computer/Finder. Open it.
7. Copy the entire contents of the IPOD_CONTROL folder to your desktop.
8. If you're in Windows, right-click on the copy, click Properties, and uncheck "Hidden."
9. In iTunes, make sure your preferences are set to copy files to the iTunes Music Folder when adding them to your library.
10. Drag the copy into an open iTunes window. Wait for it to finish importing, analyzing, etc. then delete the copy from your desktop.
11. If you had any iTunes purchased stuff, click Store > Authorize Computer and type your email and password that you purchased them with.
12. Reverse step 5. (If on a Mac, change "true" to "false" in the Terminal command)
13. Sync your iPod.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

What I meant was "My Computer" if you're on Windows XP, "Computer" if you're on Windows Vista, or "Finder" if you're on Mac OS X.

If you're on Windows, it should be in your Start menu. If you're on a Mac, it should be on your Dock (look for the picture of the face.)
