Is there any way forwarding email with MX records to a non google apps gmail account, perhaps a free DNS service?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

GMX.com and/or Fastmail.FM can do this AFAIK, you can have their system check with POP or IMAP and you can even then forward your mail based on a wildcard rule to any address you like.
This is how the settings would look for fastmail.
Code:
Mail Servers:
Domain Server Rank
my-domain.net in1.smtp.messagingengine.com 0
*my-domain.net in1.smtp.messagingengine.com 0
my-domain.net in2.smtp.messagingengine.com 5
*.my-domain.net in2.smtp.messagingengine.com 5

M$Zoneedit.com (https://legacy.zoneedit.com) is a free DNS hosting service where you can host up to 5 domain names for free. Once you've registered your domain, it has a real easy to use control panel with an option called MailForward.
Just go to the MailForward page and fill in the email address at your domain that you want mail forwarded from, say name@yourdomain.com and the email address you want mail forwarded to, so for instance name@gmail.com.
This will forward all mail addressed to name@yourdomain.com to your gmail address name@gmail.com.

You would ofcoars replace my-domain.net or .com with whatever your domain is.
