Is there any research on the effects of light smoking (say 5 or fewer cigarettes a week) on long-term health?
I have smoked very lightly since I was 18. I am now 29. Sometimes weeks will go by without smoking. Sometimes I will smoke 8 cigarettes in a night at a party (maybe once every month or two). I have never felt addicted to cigarettes. You don't have to tell me the dangers of smoking - my father died of lung cancer. But he also smoked since he was a child and smoked 2-3 packs a day regularly.

According to a research on 23.521 men and 19.201 women, aged 35–49 years, who smoke 1-4 cigarettes per day:
- There is an increase in serum total cholesterol and serum triglycerides by cigarette consumption.
- Light smokers have higher death rates than never smokers, the death rates increasing with increasing cigarette consumption.
- Light smokers have higher relative risk of dying from any cause about 1.5 times higher than in never smokers. 3 times higher risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease, and 5 times higher risk of dying from lung cancer in women.
