The best gun store near Austin (in my opinion) is Cabelas in Buda just to the south of the downtown Austin on I35. It's a quick 20 minute drive and well worth it. Their selection of all things gun related is absolutely astounding. http://www.cabelas.com/retail-stores-buda.shtml
It's no surprise that when people think of Texas, they think of cowboys and gun racks in the back of diesel pickup windows. It's not exactly like that though. There are quite a few guns, that's true, but you're not likely to see them out on display on the average citizen.
