Is there any commenting functionality in Tumblr?

In Tumblr it is easy to mark posts that you like and reblog them.

But there doesn't seem to be any commenting functionality, or if there is, it doesn't seem to get used a lot.

Am I missing something?

I love many things about Tumblr, but this seems to be a major shortcoming.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Commenting is a little different on Tumblr. You use the "reply" button located at the top right hand corner of the post when viewing your dashboard. It's beside the heart ("like") and the reblog button.

Don't see it?

The key is that in order to make a comment on tumblr that is a TRUE comment (or "reply"), you must not only be following the person, but they must be following YOU as well. There is no option to reply to a person that is not following you.

The other option is to reblog and add a note at the bottom. This will be added to the notes for the original poster, and if the option is selected, they will get an email containing your reply.

I agree, it is a bit frustrating when you want to make a comment to someone that doesn't follow you back. But otherwise, I really do like Tumblr, and I think it could be the next big thing. It already is in some parts of the US, UK, and Australia!

Ah, that explains it.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion going on in the Tumblr blogs that I follow. But I'm pretty new on there, and it might be that the ones I've found aren't typical.

What's your tumblr url?

For the info of anyone that cares, you can add Disquis commenting to Tumblr.

It's pretty easy, you register an account on Disquis and it'll take you through a couple of steps, including telling you what you need to tweak in your Tumblr setting.

I'm here btw.

EDIT:

But I don't yet know if having Disquis enabled means that anyone (with a Disquis id anyway) can comment, or if they still have to follow you, you still have to follow you.

Still bemused. :)

Yeah, I haven't done a lot of searching around, it's just what I've noticed. Same as DMs in Twitter, both people have to follow each other.

I don't share my tumblr URL at the moment, sorry @philipy!
