Is there an iPhone killer on the US market? If so, what is it and why is it the iPhone killer?

I'm also interested in the service provider the phone is tethered to and how that influences service and price.

I have an iPhone. My contract is ending so I'm considering other carriers.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

Just a quick comment the only thing that has come even close to the functionality of the iphone if given the option to have 2 devices is the REX 6000 And a Motorola RAZR M3 (on verizon (CDMA) )

Believe it or not.!

I have done research on every other device/s known to man.

I work for 1SRC.com as a PDA and Mobile consultant.

And i think its safe to say I probably know more about phones than any man alive in the northeast united states.

To answer your question about service providers!....

For starters
Since apple and AT&T are now re-enabling the ability of at home activation of the device AND the fact that the OSX86 project has found a way to "jailbreak"(Software unlock the security that only allows use of the iphone exclusively with AT&T) it is now possible to use t-mobile again with the new 3G model.

Although keep in mind you will need a certain basebanded iphone 3G series.

Also.

There is something amazing called DUAL Sim card hardware sim chips that allow a user to literally be logged on to both AT&T AND T-Mobile simultaneously !

Man i sound like a fanboy..

I would vote for the Nokia E71. At least that's What I'm going to buy...

The iPhone has serious drawbacks in my opinion. It has a very closed environment, compared to Nokia's 'everything goes' series 60 environment. The iPhone lacks any sort of keyboard, whereas the E71 has a quite usable keyboard. The iPhone has no removable battery, whereas the E71 allows for a massive aftermarket battery that will allow it to talk for nearly 20 hours.

Don't get me wrong; for people who only need what the iPhone does, it is pretty much untouchable. For the rest of us, there are a lot of options. For me, the E71 easily beats the iPhone in meeting my needs.

No. But not because there isn't better hardware out there. There is a target market for iPhone consumers, and only the iPhone will be able to serve that market.

Now, if you're asking about functionality + value, then there are a lot of better choices than an iPhone.

The current top-end smartphones (Windows Mobile devices in this instance) are the HTC Touch Pro and HTC Diamond, available on both Sprint and Verizon networks.

If you're looking for smartphone capabilities, then these two devices are the top of the heap.

Of the choices, Sprint's Touch Pro has the best combination of price + performance + plan. Their 'Simply Everything' plan is the best on the market and includes unlimited everything (Voice, Data, Text) for $99/month. Verizon also has an unlimited everything plan, but restricts the unlimited data to web (Sprint does not restrict content), and costs $139/month.

Additionally, Verizon cripples their version of the Touch Pro with less RAM, and a GPS lock that restricts it to their VZNav application.

There have been, at least, a couple "IPhone Killers", and none of them compare to the IPhone. The Samsung Instinct was the first, and upon purchasing this device, I was supremely disappointed. The Instinct, for instance, lacks Wi-Fi capabilities and all technologies that go with that, such as: VPN Support, MS Outlook integration, Telnet/SSH support, etc. Not to mention, most of these devices lack 3rd party application support. That may not sound like much, but, it prevents included technologies, such as: Instant Messengers, Java, Flash, etc. There was more time and money put into the development and design of the IPhone than any two other phones on the market, and it is for that reason that there is no other phone on the market that can compete. To add to that, the IPhone has the best integrated GPS available on a phone. (In all seriousness, though... It's the ability to Remote Desktop that makes me drool, though.)

Till now there is no iPhone killer in the market. Blackberry did struggle through coming up with a competitor but the very smoothness and the user experience which the iphone creates lacked in blackberry. The interaction is so opaque that the user actually "knows" he/she is interacting with a device which in itself is a failure. Many other companies have come up with a touch style phone but have not gotten close to the iphone. A very close competitor could be the new nokia touch phone but it is still to hit the common user.

At the moment, no. It's as simple as that

The Blackberry Storm has been a disappointment to most, but with their new firmware updates and patches I'm sure it'll be a respectable phone. The blackberry's main feature is the really cool keyboard! It makes email easy. So the Blackberry Storm defeats the purpose of the blackberry. And if they wanted to make a touchscreen phone, they shouldn't have rushed it out.

The iPhone continues to be a cool phone that does it all. It's even becoming a viable gaming device!

But "iPhone killer"!?!? No.

Google has more momentum than ATT. I want Apple to succeed, but I also believe that those that cannot get 3G network, nor want to deal with notorious ATT customer service and fees, will flock to an Android device. Sure, Android devices have been released with battery life issues, but that is only a first generation problem. There will be an Android phone in every provider store in the next 18 months. Internet will probably cheap if not free.
So the answer is NO, there is no current iPhone killer. And whether anything will kill the iPhone is a lot more difficult to determine, than saying it will have competition, and will be even more difficult to determine once the ATT / Apple relationship is no longer exclusive.

There is not, but some rival phones are the LG Prada, HTC Touch, Nokia N95, and the Google Android phone. Here are a few top 10 lists .

Not at the moment. The iPhone has many disadvantages however. Don't get me wrong. I'm an Apple fan, but the iPhone lacks many features. My best solution is to use a combination of devices. I am not sure any cell phone manufacturer is in a position to build an iPhone killer. Blackberry tried and failed with the Storm. Blackberries are still better for typing, emails, tethering and IM (background processes!). The removable battery and the flash are also really missing on the iPhone. I think right now the best is to switch SIMs between a Blackberry and an iPhone until Apple fixes the iPhone's missing features.

I don't think there is.

Android is an open standard that is backed by a good company, so there's a ton of potential in that. But it's not quite there yet.

The Blackberry Storm has gotten mostly bad reviews. Most companies that try to mimic Apple fail. They should stick what's made them successful.

And Windows Mobile? Please. Don't make me laugh.

Although it isn't a single device, my combination of a cheap cell phone that was free with service and an iPod Touch seems to be great.

The cell phone has better call quality and battery life than the iPhone, which is the only important thing for me in a phone.

The iPod is super slim, meaning i can take it anywhere. I can play games on it, browse the web on a hotspot, and listen to my music.

I can also leave the iPod behind if I am going somewhere where it might get lost, damaged, or stolen (school, beach, vacation) but still take the cell phone, which is worth less.

These two devices fit me much better than an iPhone.

The Pomegranate Phone is the only device that comes close. Too bad it's just like something out of a James Bond movie..
