Is there an iPhone killer on the US market? If so, what is it and why is it the iPhone killer?
I have an iPhone. My contract is ending so I'm considering other carriers.

M$The iPhone has serious drawbacks in my opinion. It has a very closed environment, compared to Nokia's 'everything goes' series 60 environment. The iPhone lacks any sort of keyboard, whereas the E71 has a quite usable keyboard. The iPhone has no removable battery, whereas the E71 allows for a massive aftermarket battery that will allow it to talk for nearly 20 hours.
Don't get me wrong; for people who only need what the iPhone does, it is pretty much untouchable. For the rest of us, there are a lot of options. For me, the E71 easily beats the iPhone in meeting my needs.

M$Now, if you're asking about functionality + value, then there are a lot of better choices than an iPhone.
The current top-end smartphones (Windows Mobile devices in this instance) are the HTC Touch Pro and HTC Diamond, available on both Sprint and Verizon networks.
If you're looking for smartphone capabilities, then these two devices are the top of the heap.
Of the choices, Sprint's Touch Pro has the best combination of price + performance + plan. Their 'Simply Everything' plan is the best on the market and includes unlimited everything (Voice, Data, Text) for $99/month. Verizon also has an unlimited everything plan, but restricts the unlimited data to web (Sprint does not restrict content), and costs $139/month.
Additionally, Verizon cripples their version of the Touch Pro with less RAM, and a GPS lock that restricts it to their VZNav application.

M$The Blackberry Storm has been a disappointment to most, but with their new firmware updates and patches I'm sure it'll be a respectable phone. The blackberry's main feature is the really cool keyboard! It makes email easy. So the Blackberry Storm defeats the purpose of the blackberry. And if they wanted to make a touchscreen phone, they shouldn't have rushed it out.
The iPhone continues to be a cool phone that does it all. It's even becoming a viable gaming device!
But "iPhone killer"!?!? No.

M$So the answer is NO, there is no current iPhone killer. And whether anything will kill the iPhone is a lot more difficult to determine, than saying it will have competition, and will be even more difficult to determine once the ATT / Apple relationship is no longer exclusive.

M$Android is an open standard that is backed by a good company, so there's a ton of potential in that. But it's not quite there yet.
The Blackberry Storm has gotten mostly bad reviews. Most companies that try to mimic Apple fail. They should stick what's made them successful.
And Windows Mobile? Please. Don't make me laugh.

M$The cell phone has better call quality and battery life than the iPhone, which is the only important thing for me in a phone.
The iPod is super slim, meaning i can take it anywhere. I can play games on it, browse the web on a hotspot, and listen to my music.
I can also leave the iPod behind if I am going somewhere where it might get lost, damaged, or stolen (school, beach, vacation) but still take the cell phone, which is worth less.
These two devices fit me much better than an iPhone.

Just a quick comment the only thing that has come even close to the functionality of the iphone if given the option to have 2 devices is the REX 6000 And a Motorola RAZR M3 (on verizon (CDMA) )
Believe it or not.!
I have done research on every other device/s known to man.
I work for 1SRC.com as a PDA and Mobile consultant.
And i think its safe to say I probably know more about phones than any man alive in the northeast united states.
To answer your question about service providers!....
For starters
Since apple and AT&T are now re-enabling the ability of at home activation of the device AND the fact that the OSX86 project has found a way to "jailbreak"(Software unlock the security that only allows use of the iphone exclusively with AT&T) it is now possible to use t-mobile again with the new 3G model.
Although keep in mind you will need a certain basebanded iphone 3G series.
Also.
There is something amazing called DUAL Sim card hardware sim chips that allow a user to literally be logged on to both AT&T AND T-Mobile simultaneously !
Man i sound like a fanboy..
