Is there an actual term for when a cat puffs up its tail?

Pfffft!!
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Currently there are no terms for this. They perform this action involuntarily from one of two emotions/situations.

-Extreme aggression/defensiveness due to confrontation.
-Extreme excitement/playfulness. ie: An overabundance of energy or stimulating interaction with other animals

The term is "bristle." When a cat is afraid, it will bristle its tail.

The link gives more information on cat tail signals.

They fluff up because it makes them appear bigger (and scarier) than they really are, it's a defense mechanism that often they practice during play.
i don't believe that there is, but I would call it a defense mechanism.

I'm not sure about a term, but I call it poofing up. I think they do it to make themselves look bigger.

As far as I can find, there is no term for when a cat puffs up its tail. Here is the link to Animal Planet describing what it means: http://animal.discovery.com/guides/cats/safety/body.html
If there was a term I would expect it to be there.
