Another way is to use a social networking site like myspace and "friend" folks and tell them to read your stuff and give you feedback. It might not be professional but it's a way to get some practice and you might get some good ideas from people who might potentially be your fans someday. I have a couple of writers as friends on myspace and one of them I ordered his self published book from Amazon, and now am waiting for the next one to come out.
