Is there a way to hook up a 4" monitor from a Tomtom xl n14644 to a computer?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Are you asking because:

1) Some TomToms use Linux and so it is conceivable the device my be used as a display for a computer. That would be interesting.

-or-

2) You ripped out the LCD and are now wondering what all the wires are for. I would too. Maybe someone can tell us if there is a standard. If not, well, I am betting getting a "naked" LCD running again will be difficult.

A quick look around the web and I didn't find anyone else with a recipe to do this (Run a "naked" TomTom LCD). So I've got to ask why not just use something like this:

Basically, this is a monitor with one of those USB/VGA dongles built in. I know it's not a hack. But when off the shelf products exist I find it hard to take the time away from other "hacks" I'm involved in.

-good luck

These monitors are not what I had in mind. I really want a monitor smaller than 5" to use for a head mounted display. If you know of any good HMDs rather than what I asked, that's cool too.

Try to google "sparkfun oled". Sparkfun.com has several Organic Light Emitting Diode colour displays that are on the order of an inch wide. They should have some LCDs as well if that is what you prefer. I would think the OLEDs would be thinner as they require no back lighting. I'm thinking these, with some sort of lens system, is more what you are looking for then a display on the order of 3 inches - common on most GPS units.

Sparkfun.com is geared more toward the individual as well as the hacker while places like Digikey.com is geared toward industry. You will find more pictures and howto's at Sparkfun.com where you will find lots of packaging, quantity discount and inventory information at Digikey.com.

-good luck
