Is there a way to follow someone on twitter and not receive their updates?

I have a number of people I follow that just aren't very good at tweeting or they tweet bs stuff that no one cares about. I don't want to unfollow them though and send a message that I don't care about them.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Maybe only turn on "device updates" feature for interesting tweeters? u can skim others on website.

I follow a number of people but only have the best ones update to my cell phone. Those who tweet too often or uninterestingly, I can skim a few times a week on the Twitter site while I'm on-line. I also use the twitterfox add-on for firefox so new tweets from anyone show up briefly at the bottom of my screen then go away.

On the off chance that you don't know how to change the device updates feature:
--click the "_following_" link underneath your username on your Twitter home page
--a list of all the people you follow will magically appear
--under each persons name you'll see "Device updates:" and you can click Yes for the ones you want sent to your phone (or other mobile device) and No for the ones you are wishing you didn't have to read so often.

If you don't even want to skim over them in the list on your twitter homepage, I'm afraid the only option is to unfollow them. Maybe if you explain first that you are scaling back and trying to simplify they won't be hurt???

Unfortunately there is not, then what's the point of following them if you don't want to get their updates?

If you use TweetDeck, then you can organize the people you follow into groups. That way, you don't have to read all the tweets of everyone you follow - you can just create a group containing the people you actually want to read:
