Is there a way to choose to have a lucid dream?

When I was a kid, I always used to have lucid dreams. Then one night, it just stopped. I couldn't get myself back there. Is it possible to force yourself into a lucid dream? Can I consciously make this decision before I go to sleep? Or is it completely out of my control?

Lucid dreams are when you are in a semi waking state and aware that you are dreaming.
You may sleep easier if you're fit and non-stressed.
However Cheese may also work. The British Cheese Board did a study in 2005 that showed that Cheese does help you dream.
Half an hour before bed have 2/3 Oz of cheese.
Stilton apparently gives you interesting dreams.
Red Leicester - nostalgic dreams
Lancashire - dreams about work
Cheshire - dreamless sleep.

In 1964 The British medical journal also reported on cheese and dreams.
Horrifying dreams - try Cheddar cheese.

So drug interactions with Tryptophan (an amino acid) - available in Cheese - may have something to do with it...

Personally the best dreams i ever had were cheese induced and Cheddar driven. I think we need a new science on this one.

Lucid dreaming takes preparation. Here are some tips:

1. Prepare yourself for sleep. Get comfortable and tell yourself you will dream.

2. Repeat your affirmation several times to yourself.

3. Hold your intent in mind and don't waiver from it.

4. Record your lucid dream in a journal you keep by your bed.

Lucid dreaming is a strange phenomenon. There are a few basic ways to cause lucid dreams, and another few to be able to actually control them. What many people don't realize is that just because you are aware you are dreaming, does not mean you can control them. Another important thing is to realize that you probably do have lucid dreams once in a while, you just very quickly forget them
.

REALITY CHECKS

The classical and most well known way to become lucid is when you are having a dream and that it can't possibly be real. For example, you might realize that people around you are flying but thats not exactly normal. If you wish to become lucid you need to perform what are called reality checks (RC) all through the day. This carries into your dreams as a habit and you are more likely to realize you're dreaming.

For example, every time you walk through a door, or eat some food, perform a reality check. So what is a reality check? Well its a test you can perform on your environment to make sure its real. Some good examples are:
  • Look into a mirror or reflective surface. In dreams the reflection is often distorted or non-existent.
  • Read something. In dreams the word might be fuzzy or change when you look back.
  • Look at the time. In dreams your sense of time is messed up and if you look at your watch then look back a few seconds later, in dreams the time could be hours different.
  • Jump and see if you fly. 'Cause this is kinda hard to do in real life :)

By the way, pinching yourself is NOT a good reality check since you can experience basic pain in dreams. Not real pain, but more like the memory of a painful incident.

You should perform these checks often through the day (say, at least 10 times) and this will carry over into your dreams and you should subconsciously perform them and realize something is wrong.

DREAM CONTROL

Once you realize you are in a dream, the most likely thing to happen is for you to wake up. This is really annoying since you become so excited yet it only lasts a few seconds. To prevent this, you should remind yourself to remain calm and look at your hands.

Once you are looking at your hands, ignore everything around you and instead stare at every detail, every wrinkle and line, on your hand and you should stay in your dream world. After a while (30 seconds usually works for me) look up and the dream scene should be quite stable. Whenever the dream scene becomes unstable, repeat the staring-at-the-hands routine.

You should find that you have a certain amount of control over your dream. If at first you can't control it, try simply controlling yourself. A lot of the time you will find you have little or no control over the surroundings, but only over yourself. Remind yourself that you can, if you wanted, wake up but don't do this often and only in a scary situation.

OTHER TIPS :)

  • If you are bored of your dream, or wish to travel elsewhere, you can use a technique called dream spinning. Spin around on the spot three times, visualizing where you want to be. When you open your eyes (in the dream of course) you should be where you visualized.
  • If you didn't visualize somewhere, you may find yourself in "the void" which is simply a place of complete blackness. To get out of here try dream spinning again, or waking up.
  • To wake up close your eyes in the dream and open them suddenly. This usually results in you opening your eyes in real life.
  • To control the environment around you, try saying what you want to happen repeatedly. If you want someone you know in real life to appear, try calling them on a mobile. Most of the time they will simply appear in fount of you. If you wish to fly, try jumping and staying in the air or imagining the scene was under water.

Thats it :) Hope it helps. If you have any more questions about lucid dreaming (and you probably have a lot!) feel free to message me. Happy Dreaming
