Is there a way to add icons to ipod touch UP AND DOWN IN ROWS rather than side to side?

From my experience with both the iphone and ipod touch using the official firmware I have never seen this done.
I do remember when I had my iphone jailbroken nearly a year ago that when I added applications I got to them by scrolling the home page down. I don't know how this is handled now that the phone supports multiple pages of apps, but if it is possible at all it will be with one of the jailbroken firmwares.
