Is there a way I can convert my DVDs into MP4 files or similar so I can put them on my ipod?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

http://media-convert.com/ can convert DVD files on your hard drive to any format you desire. It does not require you to download any program, as the conversion is done on the server. Unless you have a fast connection, it will take a while.

It is possible, but may be illegal.

Most commercial DVDs are encrypted, and products like the above mentioned Handbrake (a wonderful bit of software, I'll add) require an unencrypted data source. There are programs you can use to decrypt commercial DVDs but the legality of doing so is still being fought over in the courts of many nations, including the US, typically under the "Fair Use" doctrine which can be exemplified in our own Copyright Law.

There is an open source project called Handbrake that allows for DVD --> MP4 conversions.

http://handbrake.fr/

I might be able to find you a tutorial if you can let me know if you are using a Mac or PC.
