Is there a way for me to check whether my new HTC phone has an AMOLED screen (as opposed to an S-LCD) without comparing to another screen?

Well for one thing, if you already purchased your phone, it's most likely an AMOLED since they only just decided that they were going to change the screens to super LCD for later this summer: http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-20011620-85.html
If you're going to purchase a phone and want to figure out if its a super LCD, there is a video that shows the two screens side by side. Don't know if that helps in you figuring out which one is which though - it looks like the AMOLED looks brighter and has cleaner colours.
