is there a ssh client like'putty' for the mac

Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Unlike Windows, SSH is built-in to the Mac OS. You can access it via the Terminal with the command ssh. If you do want a GUI front-end something like JellyFish:

Simple. Open Terminal -- it's in Applications -> Utilities. Among all the other standard Unix/BSD utilities, there is an SSH client. Just enter the ssh command you want to run. If you are coming from Windows and aren't familiar with ssh, the typical command you will run is:

ssh username@host.name

--
There's also iTerminal:
http://iterm.sourceforge.net/

And a couple programs if you're still not convinced:

The SSH built into OS X is also able to handle keys in the same way that putty and pageant do on windows. This makes you connection to remote hosts more secure as your actual password is never transmitted. There's a step by step guide on O'Reilly that shows you how to generate the keys and where to put them (see link in sources).

You don't need one. Use Mac's built in console application. If you want to connect to an SSH host, use ssh command http://tinyurl.com/4lshfa

'ssh' in the Terminal is great. No GUI, but who needs that anyway?

There is JellyfiSSH, but Mac comes with Terminal built in so you are probably best off using that.

OSX is built on *nix, so there's already a built-in SSH client. See http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh/ssh_osx.php3 for details.

Not as nice as Putty but the only one I can think of is JellyfiSSH. http://www.grepsoft.net/jellyfissh.html It is more of a bookmark manager rather than a client as it will save your connection options but launch a terminal to open the command line ssh program. Any particular feature you are looking for?

If you want to have some management of sessions I'd suggest getting used to screen. It comes with OS X and it's very simple and easy to use for anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of UNIX like commands.

It's built into the terminal interface - SSH was originally a Unix/Linux command line client, and OSX is essentially Unix under the hood.

Just type "ssh [server]" from a terminal, and it should prompt you for the logon. If you need to use specific encryption protocols or ports, you will need to look into the command line switches of the ssh command.

The ssh command effectively opens the SSH connection, after which point you are effectively talking to the destination server.

I would suggest using the built in ssh client that is accessible through the Terminal application.

Once you open Terminal you may ssh to a remote server by executing the following command:

"ssh username@domain.com"

You will then be prompted for your password. Once you login successfully it is the exact same as if you had used Putty.

There is no reason to download an SSH client for the Mac OS X operating system. The system comes with an SSH Client built in. To access this SSH client users need to open a terminal session on their computer (Applications > Utilities > Terminal). From the terminal session the user should type in the following on the command line:
prompt>ssh username@system

There's http://putty.darwinports.com/ you can try.

However, SSH and Telnet are built into OS X. Bring up the Terminal application from the applications folder and type in "ssh myusername@myurl.com" and it will attempt to log you in using SSH.
