Is there a graphical bootloader available for a dual booted XP and Linux computer? (XP installed first)

Just wondering because whenever Ubuntu updates itself it adds another version to select from in addition to its recovery mode option. Windows XP is at the bottom of the list and when the rest of my family use the computer they're not aware of how to go into XP. I think the current bootloader is GRUB (installed when I put Ubuntu onto the machine). Is there a good graphical interface with two icons for Ubuntu or Windows that I can just click and boot into that Operating System?

I'd like links and screenshots if you have any, and as it's likely to be an open source program I would like it to be free and easy to install - I'm not proficient in command lines.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

GAG is probably the best choice for your installation. GRUB is really great for managing kernels, and it will do the job of being a boot manager, but I don't think it really shines that way.

Here is a pretty well-written HOWTO for installing GAG:

http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/01/19/howto-install-gag-on-a-dual-boot-windows-ubuntu-box/

also read this before proceeding. Neither article is long:

http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/01/19/howto-install-gag-on-a-default-ubuntu-box/

With GAG installed, when you choose to boot to Ubuntu, it will bring up the GRUB menu, so you still have all your recovery options for when Ubuntu updates. Even for someone with multiple Linux installations, GAG is useful in that it allows each installation to have its own boot manager installation (so that your GRUB for Ubuntu, for instance, doesn't interfere with your GRUB for Red Hat).

As with any operation that messes with the boot loader, you really make sure you can get back into your system if anything goes wrong. Here are instructions for restoring either XP or GRUB.:

http://sathyasays.com/2008/10/29/how-to-fix-mbr-after-installinguninstalling-windowslinux-in-a-dual-boot-fixingboot-problems-in-linux-windows-dual-boot/

If possible, back up your system before you begin, and it doesn't hurt to have the Ubuntu Live CD on hand. If anything goes wrong, you should be able to recover your system:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-boot-ubuntu-linux-rescue-mode/

The beauty of this setup is that you are installing Ubuntu to the root of your Linux drive, and it can therefore be updated all it wants without changing the initial boot loader screen. Your family will only see the GAG boot loader, which won't change. When you boot to Ubuntu, though, GAG will actually load GRUB, and then you get all your options (even the one to boot Windows). This seems like it would be ideal for you.

I should add that even if you install a different boot manager, such as System Commander, you will still want to install GRUB to the root (\) partition for your Ubuntu installation, otherwise the updates will overwrite the other boot manager.

I don't have any idea about graphical boot loader, but you can modify "/etc/grub.conf" to change the default boot option. Default value is 0, change it to 1 in order to boot the win XP whenever you start the system. You can also set the time limit for which boot option appears on screen by setting timeout value.

Whatever bootloader will you put, ubuntu or a windows reinstall will always overwrite-it. The solution is to boot from a floppy or a cd.

It seems like GAG may be a solution for you to consider. Check the links.

Now... It appears that there is some risk involved in what you want to do. An occasional report of a zapped partition, etc. Proceed with knowledge and caution. (and backup....)

Good luck.

Hmm, your bootloader does not default to WIN XP than for those that do not choose an option? I have Ubuntu installed via Wubi and ti gives me that option with MS Vista listed first as default option than Ubutnu..

yes but I have a full installation on a logical partition on the hard disk, the bootloader now installed is GRUB. I mainly have issue with the 5 extra unnecessary ubuntu options (one for each major update, plus their recovery modes means i have 6 options for ubuntu)
